Rebecca Martin in November

Greetings.

This season, I am heading to Europe for a very short tour with the band. Looking forward to seeing some of you in each new part of the world.

When I return home, I will continue to write for a new recording tentatively titled ‘Twain’.

The record will be recorded live to two track - duo with Larry Grenadier (who will play the loveliest bass arrangements to my tunes) on acoustic bass guitar. I will be on acoustic guitar and probably using that fantastic old shoe microphone once more.

We’ll record at The Clubhouse in Rhinebeck, NY again (we loved it so much making ‘The Growing Season'. Brian Blade also decided to record ‘Seasons of Change’ at Paul’s place right after our magical experience. Man, if you haven’t checked out Paul Antonell’s studio, you must).

James Farber will be at the helm.

I expect it to be out sometime in the Spring on Sunnyside Records.

Looking forward to it all.

Summer Song

Last one. KR, love you baby.

SUMMER SONG
K. Rosenwinkel/R. Martin

On the heels
Of years gone by
Wide awake, I was
I'm always, love.

On the heels
Of years gone by
Run away, so far away
How love's changed.

In the midst of all that's opening
Summer song's can play again
Let the world and all of the voices sing
There's room for all and everything
and everywhere can hear

A single sigh
Far away, so far
From where you are
and what's at stake

Here the choices
The choices made were mine
and I'm gonna meet you downtown tonight
Carve our name on the wall
Written there for all
Their eyes to see

In the midst of all that's opening
Summer song can play again
Let the world and all the voices sing
there's room for all and everything

In the midst of all that's opening
Summer song's can play again
Let the world and all the voices sing
There's room for all and everything.

So everyone can hear.

Use of Light

Another of Kurt's. Love writing lyrics to his melody's.

USE OF LIGHT
K. Rosenwinkel/R. Martin

Winter's use of light
Cast it's stars
Pale moon

Frozen lines
Of railroad cars
Still burn through
The blinding trail

In her heart
That's restless and miles away
From the shoreline
It's tangled waves
Along the river wild

Ouro Preto (Down A Shaded Path)

A lyric put to one of Kurt Rosenwinkel's latest compositions.

OURO PRETO (Down A Shaded Path)
K. Rosenwinkel/R. Martin

Here
An open sea
A clearing
Where she stands
Beasts at bay
How will the story end?
Far from the cool dune grass.
Down a shaded path.

It's sunken walls
and land mines
Built of words
Some might say
A promise is just pretense
Guised in a summer dress
Down a shaded path

We walked for days
The pale moon
Waxed and waned
Beasts at bay
How will our story end?
Just as we thought it would
Down a shaded path.

In search of heart.

This effort put into song shouldn't be an effort at all. I know there is nothing more than space and softness necessary. The creation of a tune is all feminine and the effort, the will - well, masculine. No doubt they are both needed to get it down on paper.

Our minds and the short distance to the heart is a linear trip with a mountain between them. I imagine traveling inward and down in search of mine.

Duke! Low Key Lightly

I was challenged to write a lyric to 'Low Key Lightly'. A great tune by Duke Ellington. Hard to believe there aren't any lyrics already...

LOW KEY LIGHTLY (Lucky in Love)
D. Ellington/R. Martin

Those eyes
The far and away look in those eyes
Whenever they may rest on mine
Would it remind of loverly?

Those days
The far and away of those days
Once in while
I hear the tender sound
Of 'Marry me, for all time'.

When that warm wind blew in like a whisper
Through the forest up and into
Our two hearts burning design.

And like a dream
I understand what it means
Lucky in love
The wise men said
The heart's best kept
On one's sleeve.

New tune: To Up and Go

TO UP AND GO
R. Martin

All the summer long
There was a choice to make
A face amongst the crowd
The sun was beating down

Well you've come to far
To up and go
Believe me when
I tell you so

Just before the dawn
There was a calling out
And everyone stood eyes and ears
and gaping mouths

Well you've come to far
To up and go
Believe me when
I tell you so.

All the summer long
There was a choice to make
After summer long
There was a choice to make.
